Airport drop-off parking in the UK: how to avoid surprise charges

A guide to airport drop-off charges in the UK, including terminal forecourts, free drop-off zones and short-stay alternatives.

By James Holloway, Senior writerPublished Last updated

Many UK airports now charge drivers to stop directly outside the terminal. This can be frustrating if you are only dropping someone off for a few minutes, but the rules are usually clearly signposted.

This guide explains the main options for airport drop-offs and how to avoid unexpected charges.

Terminal drop-off zones

Terminal drop-off zones are usually the most convenient option because they are closest to departures. They are also often the most expensive for a short stop.

Most airport drop-off areas use ANPR cameras, so charges apply automatically based on your vehicle registration and time of entry.

Free or cheaper drop-off areas

Some airports provide a free or lower-cost drop-off area further from the terminal. This may involve a shuttle bus, a longer walk or a short train or tram connection.

If you have plenty of time, these areas can be a better option than paying for the terminal forecourt.

Short-stay car parks

For longer goodbyes or if the passenger needs help with luggage, a short-stay car park may be more practical than using a fast-moving drop-off lane.

Short-stay parking can be expensive, but it gives you more time and usually easier pedestrian access to the terminal.

Tips before setting off

  • Check the airport’s official drop-off rules before leaving.
  • Know whether payment is online, at a machine or automatic.
  • Allow extra time during school holidays and early morning peaks.
  • Do not stop on approach roads or nearby verges to avoid a fee.
