How to find cheap parking in UK city centres

Practical tips for finding cheaper parking in UK city centres, from Park & Ride to council car parks and off-peak rates.

Central UK car parks are convenient but rarely the cheapest option. With a little planning, most drivers can cut their parking bill significantly without adding much to the journey time.

These tips work in most UK city centres — the exact savings depend on the city and time of day.

Use Park & Ride where available

Park & Ride sites sit on the edge of many UK cities and are usually much cheaper than central car parks. The price often includes the bus fare for everyone in the car, which makes it especially good value for families.

Compare council vs private car parks

Council-run car parks are often cheaper than nearby private multi-storeys, particularly for stays of more than a couple of hours. They're also more likely to publish a clear tariff online.

Look just outside the central zone

A short walk can make a big difference to price. Car parks one or two streets outside the prime central zone are typically cheaper, and you'll often find them less full at busy times.

Other ways to save

  • Check supermarket car parks where public parking is permitted (always read the signs).
  • Pre-book online — many city centre car parks publish a discounted online rate.
  • Use a driveway-rental platform near your destination for longer stays.
  • Travel outside peak hours where evening or weekend tariffs apply.
