Tips for airport parking in the UK

How to choose between short-stay, long-stay, off-airport and meet-and-greet parking at UK airports — and how to keep the cost down.

By James Holloway, Senior writerPublished Last updated

Driving to a UK airport is convenient, but airport parking is one of the most expensive parts of many trips if you don't plan ahead. Knowing the difference between the main parking types makes it easier to pick the right one.

Know the main parking types

  • Short-stay: closest to the terminal, designed for drop-offs and pick-ups, expensive for longer stays.
  • Long-stay: cheaper per day, with a shuttle bus to the terminal.
  • Off-airport: independent car parks near the airport, often cheaper than long-stay, with their own shuttle.
  • Meet-and-greet: a driver meets you at the terminal, parks the car and returns it on your way home.

Pre-book whenever you can

Turning up on the day at a UK airport car park is almost always the most expensive option. Pre-booked rates can be a fraction of the gate price, especially for long-stay and off-airport sites.

Plan your arrival

Allow extra time for traffic on terminal access roads, particularly during school holidays. For long-stay and off-airport sites, factor in shuttle waiting and travel time on top of your usual check-in window.

Drop-off charges

Most major UK airports now charge for stopping at the terminal forecourt. Free or cheaper drop-off zones are usually a short shuttle ride or walk away — check the airport's official website before you travel.
