Best ways to avoid parking fines in the UK

Common reasons UK drivers get parking tickets and PCNs — and how to avoid them on council, private and event-day parking.

Most UK parking fines come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. A few minutes spent reading signs and checking restrictions can save a lot of money and admin.

Always read the sign first

Parking restrictions in the UK are set by signs and road markings, not by what looks reasonable. Read both the main sign and any sub-plate before you leave the car — restrictions can change by day, time and vehicle type.

Mind the difference between PCNs

Penalty Charge Notices issued by councils and private parking charges from operators are different things, with different appeal routes. Check who issued the ticket before paying or appealing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Parking on a single yellow line during restricted hours.
  • Stopping in a loading bay outside permitted vehicle types.
  • Overstaying a maximum stay or free period in a car park with ANPR.
  • Parking partly in a permit-only bay even if your wheels are on the line.
  • Forgetting to enter the correct vehicle registration in a paid app.

If you do get a ticket

Don't ignore it. Most council PCNs offer a discount for paying within a short window, but you also have the right to appeal if you believe the ticket was issued incorrectly. Keep photos of signs and bay markings as evidence.
