Event parking in the UK: how to plan ahead

How to plan parking for UK concerts, sports events, festivals and arena shows, including pre-booking, traffic and alternative transport.

Event parking is different from normal parking. Thousands of people may arrive at the same time, local roads can be closed and nearby car parks may sell out early.

Whether you are heading to a concert, football match, festival or arena show, a little planning can make the journey much easier.

Book before the event

For major events, pre-booking is usually the safest approach. Official venue car parks, nearby commercial car parks and private spaces can fill up well before doors open.

Booking ahead also helps you understand walking distance, arrival routes and closing times.

Check road closures

Large UK venues often have temporary road closures before and after events. Sat nav apps may not always reflect stewarded closures or police diversions immediately.

Check the venue’s official travel page before setting off, especially for stadium concerts and city-centre arenas.

Park further away for an easier exit

The closest car park is not always the best. Parking 10–20 minutes away can mean a quicker exit after the event, especially where roads around the venue become congested.

Event parking checklist

  • Pre-book a space if travelling to a large venue.
  • Check the walking route from the car park to the entrance.
  • Know the car park closing time.
  • Have a backup location in case roads are closed.
  • Allow extra time for queues, security checks and crowd movement.
